2018 Audi S5 Sportback Engine and Performance

The S5 is powered by a 3.0 litre V6 petrol engine and unlike the previous gen car that was supercharged, this one is turbo-charged. Power and torque are also up from the predecessor and the new car puts out 354 horses and 500 Nm of torque that comes in from just 1370rpm. The motor comes mated to an eight speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The S5 is quick right from the word go. The turbo comes in at 2,000rpm after which the car accelerates blisteringly quick to its 6500rpm redline. Audi claims a 0 to 100 kph time 4.7 seconds and the S5 goes on to a top speed of 250 kph. At light throttle inputs, the gearbox shifts early for maximum efficiency and if you need to get a move on, the kick down isn’t quick like the DSGs and there is certainly a lag and jerkiness felt. The Audi Drive Select features a bunch of drive modes like Comfort, Auto Dynamic and Individual. What I love about the Dynamic mode is way the exhaust sounds. The note is sweet sounding and you do get the crackles and pops when you let go of the throttle. The S5 will easily do long distances at triple digit speeds in a calm and composed manner. With power available on tap, overtaking is also a breeze.
