2019 Mahindra Alturas G4 Engine & Performance

The Alturas G4 is powered by a 2.2 litre Euro VI compliant diesel engine that develops 180 horsepower @ 4000 rpm and 420 Nm of maximum torque that comes up between 1600 – 2000 rpm. For now the engine is BS IV compliant but will change over to comply with BS VI norms when they come in. The acceleration is quite linear with a little lag felt in the initial rpms. However, past the 1900-2000 rpm, there is a nice mid-range. Performance tends to taper off as you cross the 3800 rpm mark and the motor starts to get noisy. However, at normal cruising speeds, refinement levels are good. Transmission duties are handled by a Mercedes-Benz sourced 7 speed automatic gearbox. Shifts are smooth and the best is that there is no noticeable delay when you request a kick down. There are no paddle shifters available but it does get a manual mode. The switch on the gear lever that is used for manual shifting isn’t really nice to use.  Since our drive was restricted to the Mahindra test track, we will have to wait to give our impressions on what it feels like to drive the Alturas G4 in urban city traffic. The Alturas G4 comes with shift on the fly 4wd. There are three modes 2H, 4H and a low range 4L. We didn’t get the chance to take the SUV off-roading but we will bring a full report on that when we get the car for a longer duration. With the high ground clearance (244 mm) and Mahindra’s off-road genes, we don’t have a doubt on its capabilities.
