We love Lamborghini for staying with big naturally aspirated engines to power their mental super cars. However the Raging Bull also wont able to stay away from hybrid power for too long. The car maker has already confirmed that the upcoming Urus SUV will feature a hybrid model. The Urus is set to be officially unveiled in December this year.

The Lamborghini Huracan is on its way to become Lamborghini’s most successful model, with 9000 units already produced. Speaking on Lamborghini’s future plans, Stefano Domenicali, the boss man has said that the Huracan successor, due in 2022 will be a plug-in hybrid. There are no plans to go full electric he further added.

Enthusiasts need not frown however. Lamborghini will continue with the naturally aspirated V12 for the Aventador replacement. Domenicali said: “There is still a lot of potential for the V12. The right approach for us is to have the V10 and V12 to suit our customers and then be ready to switch to a hybrid at the right moment.”

Maurizio Reggiani, Lamborghini’s head of research and development,  said that the driving range was one of the key issues that prevented a super car from going plug-in hybrid. He said that good range is needed if the owner wants to do a good number of laps around a track before the car needs charge again.

Reggiani said Lamborghini is working with multiple industry experts, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT), to work out what type of battery system can be incorporated into a hybrid super sports car.

“We have different partnerships with the most important researchers in the world because we need to scout [for future ideas],” he said. “I think the new frontier of the super-sports car will move more and more tothe hybridisation, although there are still some questions relating to the weight and the packaging of the batteries.”
