Fancy a Mahindra SUV designed by Pininfarina? Well, that could soon be a possibility as Mahindra & Mahindra could be buying the famous Italian design house.

The 85 year old company has been a long time designer partner for the likes of Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Maserati and Peugeot to name a few. According to reports, Pininfarina is in talks with Mahindra to buy a majority stake in the firm.

Pininfarina hasnt been doing too well after the economic slowdown and in recent years, has reduced its staff to half of what it was in 2006. In 2011, they also announced that they would be ending automotive production as their contracts with Alfa Romeo and Volvo ended. Pininfarina is known to have designed a number of iconic cars like the Lancia Aurelia, Peugeot 504 coupe and convertible, Alfa Romeo Spider and many Ferraris.

Picking up a stake in Pininfarina could be a another feather in Mahindra’s cap. Mahindra also owns the Korean SUV maker Ssangyong and its Rexton SUV is currently on sale in the Indian market.
