Mahindra Marazzo Engine & Performance

The Marazzo is powered by a new 1.5 litre four cylinder diesel engine that comes from Mahindra’s mFalcon range. This engine was first seen in the KUV100 but gets an extra cylinder and a new variable geometry turbo. The is engine puts out 123 horsepower at 3500 rpm and 300 Nm torque that comes up between 1750 – 2500 rpm. What impresses from the first go is the refinement of this motor. Easily the best from Mahindra so far. There are no vibrations whatsoever and no dancing and shaking gear lever either. Acceleration is smooth and and the engine is very quiet at low and moderate speeds. Road and wind noise is well controlled too. There is a hint of turbo lag initially, but that vanishes quickly as you build up speed. The clutch is light and gear shifts are pretty smooth as well. It is also fantastic the way the motor can pull from as low as 1000 rpm in third and fourth gears. Mid range is good but the engine feels strained and runs out of breath once you cross the 3500 rpm mark. There is also an Eco mode where the engine power drops to 100 hp resulting in dulled performance but better fuel efficiency. As brilliant as this engine is, we feel it could have done with a bit more power as we found out going up inclines. Mahindra mentioned at launch that automatic gearbox will make its way into the Marazzo once the BS VI compliant engines are introduced.

Mahindra Marazzo Ride and Handling

The Marazzo gets a double wishbone suspension set up up front with a stabilizer bar and a twist beam set up at the rear. This along with 240 mm of suspension travel has done wonders for the Marazzo. Ride quality is easily one of the best around and extremely comfortable. There is a bit of lumpiness at low speeds but otherwise, this MPV will just fly over bad and broken roads. There is some vertical movement at high speeds but nothing too bad.  The electric power steering is very light and is a joy to use in city traffic and while parking. The Marazzo feels stable when going around winding roads and while body roll is inevitable, it is well controlled for a tall MPV. Grip from the tyres is confidence inspiring as well. Braking is impressive from the all wheel disc brakes too. As far as safety goes, dual airbags and ABS with EBD is standard across all variants. For an MPV of this size, six airbags could have been offered in the top end M8 variant at least.
