BMW could launch a third model in its ‘i’ line up of hybrid vehicles in the year 2018.

The latest issue of Autobild magazine carries a report that the new car, which could be called the i5 will be a plug-in hybrid using eDrive technology that BMW showcased in the 5 Series GT hybrid concept last year. It will consist of a petrol engine putting out 218 horsepower combined with two electric motors 150 horses (front) and 272 horsepower (rear). Combined output is said to be around 640 horsepower.

It is speculated the the car will be based on the long wheelbase 5 Series that is built for the Chinese market with styling cues from the upcoming 7 Series and proportions from the 6 Series Gran Coupe.

The driving range of the i5 in full electric mode is said to be 125 kms.
