Nissan to launch cheaper Datsun model in India
Nissan is planning to launch a new small car under its Datsun brand in India. This car will be positioned below the GO hatchback which is currently on sale in the Indian market.
The new car will likely be be based on the Redi-GO concept which was showcased at the Auto Expo in New Delhi in 2014. It is being developed on a new platform in alliance with Renault and would be launched in the next 18 months.
Nissan plans to keep costs low by using lighter materials and fewer components but there would be no compromise on quality and safety said Guillame Sicard, President, Nissan India. The Datsun GO had recently failed crash tests for safety.
The new Datsun small car will rival the likes of the Maruti Alto and Hyundai Eon. The current Datsun portfolio consists of the GO hatchback and the GO+ small MPV.
