I already reviewed the new 911 in its RWD avatar a few months ago and I fell head over heels in love with it. Like I said before it is all the super car you need to live with in an Indian city in this case Mumbai. This time around I got a chance to put its all wheel drive stable mate through its paces, the Carrera 4S. An all wheel drive Porsche coupled with twisties of the Amby Valley roads at Lonavla and the fast expressway is the perfect recipe for a petrol head weekend and that’s exactly what I got.

Since I have reviewed the Carrera S before, this write up will be about the differences between the S and the 4S. Visually both the cars look similar but the 4s body is wider by 44 mm and also has a wider track. There is a tail light strip that runs across between the tail lights which is the main distinguishing factor between the two cars to the naked eye. The 4S is also heavier at 1465 kg that’s to the additional axels. For the record the Carrera S tips the scales at 1415 kg.

The 4S drives in RWD most of the time unless the need arises. As soon as the need for traction is detected power is shuffled perfectly between the front and the rear wheels and there is a display on the instrument cluster showing the same. The 4S just stays glued to the road when you push it and the grin on your face widens as you go through corner after corner. There is just so much grip that it wont let you do anything silly at all. You can say it’s a guardian who wont let you kill yourself. The 4S goes from 0 to 100 kph in a claimed 4.3 seconds and goes to a top speed of 297 kph. The 4S is shod with 20 inch alloys wheels and there is a different in the tyre size as well. While front gets 245/35 ZR 20 which is similar to that on the Carrera S, the rear gets 305/30 ZR 20 rubber which is wider than that on the S which gets 295/30 ZR 20.

The Carrera 4S is a fantastic car and comes with all the virtues of its RWD counterpart. Its immensely practical and has tremendous power which is useable at the same time. It can set the tarmac on fire and at the same time has a decently sized boot to go to the supermarket to pick up your weekly supplies and drive you to work everyday. But if I were asked to choose, I would still go the Carrera S because a rear wheel drive gives you fun like no other.
