Tata Motors has been testing a new premium hatchback with test mules being spotted on Indian roads. Codenamed the X451, the new model will go up directly against the Maruti Baleno and the Hyundai i20.

The new hatch is expected to launch in 2019 and could be previewed as a concept at the upcoming 2018 Auto Expo. Based on the test cars, a Cartoq reader has come up with a render of what it could look like.

The X451 will be the first car to be built on Tata Motors’ all-new modular platform (AMP or Advanced Modular Platform). This platform will be the base for all future Tata Motors cars. The new model will come with the option of a petrol and diesel engine. While the diesel could be a reworked version of the 1.5 litre unit seen in the Nexon, it remains to be seen what the petrol engine would be. Expect the new car to come with both manual and automatic gearboxes as well.
