The Tata Safari Storme has added another feather to its cap. Tata Motors has signed a contract to supply the Indian Armed Forces with 3192 Tata Safari Storme 4×4 SUVs. The Safari Storme comes under a new category of vehicles – GS800 (General Service 800).

The Indian Ministry of Defence (MOD) had floated an RFP for vehicles with three basic criteria – minimum payload capacity of 800 kgs; hard roofs and air conditioning. For bagging the order from the army, the Safari Storme went through fifteen months of testing in various terrains across India.

Tata Motors had earlier replaced Tatra vehicles in the Army with the Tata High Mobility Vehicle 6×6 in the 10 Tonne class, and now the Gypsy is being replaced with the Safari Storme 4×4.

The Safari Storme is powered by a 2.2 litre diesel engine that develops 156 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. It comes with a shift on the fly 4×4 system and has a ground clearance of 200 mm
