The Scorpio, which has seen great success in the Indian market for 17 consecutive years, is now seeing a complete redesign. The recently released spy shots show some rather radical design changes, giving an insight as to what the final product will look like.

The Scorpio gets an updated body-on-frame chassis that will also underpin the second generation of the Mahindra Thar. From the spy shots, it is quite apparent that the body panels have been updated to impart sharp character lines to the car. The kink on the rear door is very similar to one seen on the XUV300. Also prominent is the front grille that contributes to the overall upright silhouette that the Scorpio is so famous for. The body panels have been updated to meet the new safety norms that go into effect from 1 October 2020.

The door panels are more extended, pointing to a longer wheelbase, and consequently, more room for the occupants. Towards the rear, a side-hinged tailgate along with vertically oriented tail lamps are a throwback to the outgoing Scorpio. The car retains its menacing stance in spite of sitting lower than its predecessor.

On the interiors front, not much is known except that it will be fully updated, and have front facing third-row seats. Also unclear is the fact whether or not, the new design is a product of the Pininfarina design house.

Motoring duties will be taken care of by the    BS-VI compliant 2.0-litre engine that could make up to as much as 170 hp and 400 Nm of torque in the top variants. Initially, the car will be mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, but later, it might be possible to have an automatic transmission also.

The car stands against the likes of the MG Hector, Tata Harrier and established players like Hyundai Creta. While the release schedule of the car is still unclear, it is safe to expect Mahindra to reveal the car next year and even feature in the Auto Expo 2020.
