Mahindra and Mahindra will be helping automotive giant Ford in developing their cheapest electric vehicle. The two companies had signed an MOU last September for three years. One part of this MOU was to work on electric vehicles for the global markets.

Sources have said that Mahindra will be helping Ford develop an all electric version of the Aspire sedan for India. The all electric Aspire is set for a market launch next year.

“Ford has gained tremendously from Mahindra’s strength in electric vehicles technology. The Aspire will be the first to hit the roads and, unlike its existing petrol/diesel version, which is under 4 metres in length, the electric variant will be a longer one,” one source said.

In addition to the electric Aspire that two car maker have also started work to jointly develop an all new SUV. “This is being developed jointly, and is an ambitious and bold step. The joint SUV project is at a very advanced stage and while there will be a joint platform, the design will be individual for the both the companies in line with their brand philosophies.” said the source. It remains to be seen if the new SUV will also sport an electric version.
