Mercedes Benz has unveiled the new GLC SUV which replaces the GLK in the international market. It is based on Mercedes’ new Modular Rear Architecture platform.

The GLC continues with Mercedes’ new design language. The front resembles the new C-Class and you can order LED headlamps as an option.  The bumpers with integrated underguard come in three variants: in addition to the base version there is a version optimised for off-road use with a larger angle of approach/departure, and an AMG variant. The rear also gets similar bumpers and split LED tail lamps.

The interior gets a free standing tab style screen for the COMMAND infotainment system, which can be operated by a touchpad on the centre console. The touchpad also permits letters, numbers and special characters to be entered in handwriting – in any language supported by Audio 20 or COMAND Online. The AC vents come with a metallic “cool touch” effect. A large panoramic roof can be ordered as an option. Boot space is increased to 580 litres over the GLK and with the rear seats folded, cargo space goes to 1600 litres.  The load compartment sill can be lowered by 40 mm with the AIR BODY CONTROL option and by HANDS‑FREE ACCESS, which enables the tailgate to be opened automatically by performing a swiping movement with the foot under the bumper.

The GLC will come with a choice of two diesel engines: GLC 220 d 4MATIC and GLC 250 d 4MATIC and one petrol: GLC 250 4MATIC. All engines are mated to a nine-stage 9G-TRONIC automatic gearbox. A hybrid version, the GLC 350 e 4MATIC will follow. Two AMG-tuned variants will also be available, the GLC 450 AMG sport and the hardcore GLC 63 AMG.

The Mercedes GLC will rival the Audi Q5 and BMW X3. The India launch is expected sometime next year.
