In the build up to the Auto Expo 2020, Volkswagen has officially revealed the new compact SUV for india. Naming it the Taigun, it will be part of the Group’s India 2.0 project and will be built on the MQB AO platform that has been specially been developed for India.

On the exterior, the Taigun gets a very bold and boxy face. There are LED headlamps along with a angular bonnet. There is a lot of chrome of the front grille and the bumper. The model that was showcased featured funky looking alloy wheels but the model that will hit Indian roads should get tamer designs. The rear gets LED tail lamps flanked by an LED strip running across the tail gate.

The Taigun gets a layered dashboard design with elements matching the exterior colour. These give a very fresh look to the cabin. There is a three spoke flat bottom steering wheel with brushed silver accents. Other features include a digital instrument cluster and a large 8.0-inch touchscreen.

Powering the Volkswagen Taigun will be a 1.5 litre TSI petrol engine putting out 130 hp mated to a DSG gearbox. There will be no diesel engine on offer. A CNG variant could be on the cards though.

Mr. Steffen Knapp, Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India said, “The product truly represents Volkswagen’s global SUV portfolio made specifically for the Indian market. The exterior and interior design language is created keeping in mind the needs of the aspirational Indian customers. We are quite confident that the compact SUV will be a top contender for a prospective customer. With this world premiere, we’re optimistic about tactfully driving our India strategy and realising our vision to become a sustainable brand with a 3% market share.”

The Volkswagen Taigun is expected to go on sale in India only in the year 2021.
