2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Engine & Performance

I got my hands on the C200 petrol for this drive. The C300d was also part of the lineup but time was at a premium so I couldn’t drive both on the same day. Rest assured I will be calling for the car in Mumbai and update this review. The C200 is powered by a 1.5 litre turbo petrol engine that puts out 204 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque. It also features a mild hybrid system (EQ Boost) that comprises of an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) that is placed between the engine and the transmission. This provides an additional 20 hp and 200 Nm of torque for that extra punch. All three variants come with this feature as standard.

Push the start button and the engine comes to life without even a murmur. Such is the refinement. The takes off smoothly and there is no visible lag, with the EQ Boost doing its thing. It accelerates such that you feel the engine is much bigger than it actually is. For the sedate driver in me this is just perfect. Push the pedal harder and the motor does tend to get noisy. But at the same time, it moves forward quickly and lets you ignore the strain noise from the engine. The 9G tronic automatic gearbox has smooth shifts throughout and didn’t feel confused at any point of time during the drive. Response to a kickdown could have been a tad better though. There is also a coast function as well where the gearbox disconnects from the engine, and comes back on when you tap the accelerator or speed reduces.

2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Ride & Handling

The drive had a good mix of smooth tarmac, winding roads and bad roads as well. Ride quality with the 17 inch wheels was comfortable. I took it a little fast over the undulations and the C never felt unsettled at any point. And the ride gets even better when you pick up speed. It also feels enthusiastic around the corners and it was fun pushing the car on the twisties of Mussoorie. Steering feedback was excellent and body roll went unnoticed. You feel completely in control. It feels planted at high speeds too, whatever stretches I got to push it at.
