German car maker Audi has put the new Q2 compact SUV into production at the Ingolstadt plant. The Audi Q2 made its global debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show earlier this year.

The new Audi Q will be produced on the same line as the Audi A3. It will pass through the body shop, paint shop and assembly together with the A3 sedan. Production of the Audi Q2 is now being gradually increased to approximately 450 units a day.At the Ingolstadt plant, Audi is investing in innovative methods to master the increasing complexity of production. For the start of production of the Audi Q2 for example, a fully automatic module store for the drivetrain was installed on the assembly line, increasing local storage capacity.

The Q2 measures 1.51 meters tall and 1.79 meters wide. It has a total length of 4.19 meters and a wheelbase of 2.60 meters. It features a large octogonal single frame grille with squarish headlamps that come with integrated DRLs. The front bumper gets large air intakes. There is a thick C-Pillar along with a roof spoiler. A diffuser finds place in the rear bumper.

On the interior, the Audi Q2 comes with Audi’s virtual cockpit and heads up display. It gets the Audi pre sense feature as standard. The system recognizes critical situations with other vehicles as well as pedestrians crossing in front of the vehicle, and if necessary it can initiate hard braking to a standstill at low speeds. The MMI infotainment system can be operated via a touch pad on the centre console. The Q2 gets 405 litres of boot space that can go to 1,050 litres with the rear seats folded down. The Audi Q2 is available in only a 5 door, 5 seater layout. The Audi Q2 comes with three TFSI petrol and three TDI diesel engines. The petrol engines include a 1.0 three cylinder unit and a 1.4 litre and 2.0 motor respectively. Diesel engines include a 1.6 litre motor and a 2.0 litre unit in two states of tune. Power output for these engines range from 116 horsepower to 190 horsepower. While a six speed manual gearbox is standard, Audi offers the option of a seven speed S tronic dual clutch gearbox for all engines. The top end TDI and the 2.0 TFSI engines get a newly developed dual-clutch transmission, which has a new type of oil supply and reduced friction. These two models also get the quattro all wheel drive system as standard.  The front wheel drive models get semi-independent suspension, while the quattro models have a four-link suspension. Progressive steering is standard in all versions. Adaptive dampers and Audi Drive Select are available as options.

The Audi Q2 is expected to launch in India sometime next year.
