Everyone was in a charged up mood the next morning as we set off 40 kms to Desert Glamping. We would leave the convoy SUVs here and get into Scorpio 4x4s to go the the Sam sand dunes. Madanji a veteran and head of Rajasthan Motorsports welcomed us at the camp. It was quite nostalgic for me as I was here in December 2019 when I had done the Mahindra Adventure Desert Survivor course, where you are taught how to drive in sand, plus you get certified too. You can read about my experience here. Manish gave the briefing to the entire group, the cars were allotted and a quick chai later, we were on our way to the dunes. And the media team got allotted the OG Thar, which Rohit was very excited to drive. Oh well, I called shotgun. He soon realized that the first gen Thar is a far cry from the new one. We reached Sam and once we went off the road into the sand, tyre pressures were lowered and 4×4 low was engaged. The next few hours just flew by, everyone had a go at the dunes, some got stuck and got winched out in short it was a blast. And surprise surprise, Vinod brought in the XUV700 AWD to the dunes and I have to admit, it held its own in the midst of the Scorpios and Thars. The obstacles were not as complicated as they are in the Desert Survivor course. Those are proper hardcore but these were more enough to give thrills to first timers. Totally enjoyable. We returned to Desert Glamping for evening tea and headed back to the hotel post sunset. Dinner and chit chat followed and that was the end of quite a fun filled day on the Royal Escape.
