The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen/ G-Class has been around in India for a decade now, but only in the AMG guise. It all started with the G55 in 2010 followed by the G63 later. It is also interesting to note that the G63 is the best-selling AMG in the India portfolio. I remember asking the friendly guys at Mercedes-Benz India at every press conference as to when or if the regular G-Class would launch in India. I guess they were listening and finally, this here is the G350d, that was launched in India towards the end of last year. Better late than ever, as they say. It comes with a lower price tag and is little more practical. So what is the G350d all about?

The G-Wagen is four decades old, and even though the latest gen boasts of modern touches, the boxy shape that seems to be designed with a set of rulers is still intact. And that is the old school charm of the G- Class. The upright windshield, the indicators on the front fenders, flared wheel arches, door handles, exposed door hinges, tail gate mounted spare wheel; just ooze so much character and these design elements cannot be mistaken for anything else. What distinguishes it from its AMG sibling? That list includes a three slat front grille in place of the Panamericana one, smaller 18 inch alloy wheels (our test car came with 20 inch wheels) and you won’t find the exhausts popping out from the side. The matte black paint finish on the test car gave the complete Gangsta feels.
