Volkswagen announced an SUV onslaught for the Indian market last year and it began with the unveiling of the Taigun prior to the Auto Expo 2020. The car maker says that four SUVs will be launched in the next two years. While the Taigun will see a market launch in 2021, this is the Volkswagen T-Roc, which is the first of the SUV lineup that is part of VW’s SUV plan. Launched as a CBU at Rs. 19.99 lakh ex showroom, Volkswagen recently announced that it has sold out the entire 1000 unit allocation. At first glance, the T-Roc doesn’t fit the typical definition of an SUV. So what is it exactly, and is it really that good? This review will answer those questions.

Volkswagen T-Roc Exterior

The Volkwagen T-Roc doesn’t have an imposing stance as one would expect from an SUV. The design is more on the lines of a crossover. It is 4,234 mm long, 1,573 mm tall, has 1,819 mm width and a wheelbase of 2,590 mm. With these dimensions, it is shorter than the Karoq, its Skoda cousin (4,382 mm). Even when you take height into perspective, it is pretty low and almost as tall as a hatchback, and this is something I noticed while driving around. On the other hand, the width does give it a nice poise and street presence. And I have to say the styling is classy, just what is expected from a European. Nothing is in your face and no overdose of cuts and creases. The sharp looking LED headlamps and twin slat black front grille are merged together with a chrome outline strip. There are LED daytime running lamps in the front bumper that double up as indicators, with fog lamps located further below. The air dam gets a honey comb design with a silver skid plate underneath. The bonnet is low and the front windshield is steeply raked. There is prominent black cladding on the wheel arches and bottom along the side. A crease line flows from the front fender to the rear door. The 17 inch alloy wheels have a nice design and fill the wheel arches nicely. Another highlight is the raked roofline which looks very unique. The T-Roc comes with a gloss black roof that extends to the A pillar, while the thick C pillar is finished in body colour and gets a silver outline. At the rear, the LED tail lamps get nice detailing with a bold crease line running between them. The rear bumper gets black cladding and faux exhaust surrounds and there is bold T-Roc lettering under the VW logo on the tail gate.  The Volkswagen T-roc comes with a nice colour palette and this Kurkuma Yellow on the test car is a stand out and quite eye catching.
